Developed in the Horvath lab at UCLA
PhenoAge came out of the work of Morgan Levine with Steve Horvath in the Department of Human Genetics at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. Horvath co-authored both the 2018 papers behind it, in Aging and PLOS Medicine, so it shares its lineage with the epigenetic clocks the Clock Foundation was founded to advance.
Among the most validated measures we have
The same team validated it in PLOS Medicine, in a nationally representative cohort of 6,209 US adults with up to 17 years of mortality follow-up. Each additional year of phenotypic age carried roughly a 9% higher risk of death from any cause, and the measure held up across age, sex and racial subgroups, and among people whose standard results all looked normal.
